Jonah fights back

Paul Jones was of course gutted when he let in what turned out to be a winner for West Brom on Saturday. "It would have been an easy one but it bounced just in front of me and the spin on the ball took it up and over me," said the Welsh international.

"The pitch was damp at the other end but had dried out and it bobbed up off the dry surface. But that's not an excuse because I should have got it and I felt awful when it slipped through and in.

"It was all the more disappointing because I had not had a lot to do up until then, just routine stuff really.

"They did not have many chances, a few crosses and some straight at me. And we could have been 2-0 up by half-time."

Of course Jones realises that fans will look at his mistake as being the important point of the game, but seems to be quite used to this approach. "That goes with the territory," said Jones. "I have always known that and it is just a fact of life as a goalkeeper.

"If you make a mistake it will almost certainly cost a goal but I have bounced back from such setbacks before and I will do again."

Jones has indeed bounced back from such set backs before. In fact, with only Neil Moss as back up, it's been quite easy to put Jonah straight back in. Thankfully, those days have gone. Saints have another international 'keeper at the club in Niemi.

Many thought that Niemi would go straight into the side upon his arrival, but Strachan did the right thing in letting Jones keep his place. Now, after Saturday's blunder, it will be Niemi's turn to be Saints number one. As he's a better all round 'keeper than Jones, we might not be seeing the Welshman for a while.
