Jamie Rednapp forced to hang up his boots

Rednapp, signed by father Harry in the January transfer window on a short-term contract, had visited American surgeon Dr Richard Steadman to get a final opinion on the knee problems that have plagued much of his recent career.

Harry Rednapp is quoted in the News of the World as saying: "He was getting through games last season on painkilling injections. It's been a hard decision but following medical advice he has had to put his long-term health first."

He was a popular signing at Saints and showed signs of his class, but also of his injury problems. On song he demonstrated much-needed leadership in the centre of the park and a level of tenacious tackling that took many Saints fans by surprise.

He contributed strongly to memorable victories over former teams Liverpool and Tottenham and there is no doubt that a fit Rednapp would have been a valuable asset in the Championship, a role that Dennis Wise may be asked to fill if he accepts Saint’s offer of a contract.

Jamie made 17 appearances for Saints scoring once in the F.A. Cup game against Northampton town strangely a perfect mirror of his England career which also reads 17 caps, 1 goal. He looks likely to continue his involvement with football both as a pundit and as a coach, though this seems unlikely to be with Saints at present.
