Derby chaiman Lionel Pickering confirmed that Saints had bid foir the 24-year-old former Manchester United youngster but made it clear that the offer was nowhere near their valuation.
Pickering commented: "Danny is our Player of the Year and Southampton's offer falls well short of our valuation."
