Hammond set for skippers armband

Alan Pardew has been wanting to have an outfield player as skipper and Hammond seems the right choice.

Davies has been speaking about the decision that sees him remain club caption but not the leader on the pitch.

"It's something I've spoken about with the manager and he feels that someone on the pitch wearing the armband will have more of an effect," Davis told the club's official website.

"We're at the stage now where it's little tweaks like this that we're making to give us winning performances.

"I accept that, my role will still be club captain, but it just won't be wearing the armband and I can put up with that.

"There aren't many goalkeepers who are captains and if it's going to be the difference between winning or drawing games then I accept that.

"I still feel that I'm captain of the football club, but the manager has come out and said quite loudly and proudly that is the case, so I'm as happy as I can be."
