Griffit on trial at Le Mans

After a string of promising performances for Saints reserves, French U21 Griffit made a stunning start to his Saints career with a goal minutes after coming on against Blackburn. This was followed by another dramatic late goal against Newcastle as it seemed that the Saints Academy had unearthed a gem, having signed him from French side Amiens.

However, such promise remained unfulfilled, as he struggled to establish himself in the Saints first team, spending part of last season on loan to Championship sides Leeds and Rotherham. Harry was quick to send many of Saints youngsters on loan to lower division sides to help them gain valuable experience, but unlike the likes of Jones, Mills and Surman, he failed to impress, making few appearances.

While some would argue Saints should continue to try to turn that initial promise into success, at the age of 21, and with the likes of Dyer, Walcott and Surman pushing ahead of him, his opportunity to impress may have passed.

Encouragingly for him he has already scored for the French Ligue 1 side during his trial and if he earns a move Saints fans will wish him well and reflect on what might have been.
