Going for McGold to Bale out Saints

"We have one or two young players there as well for the future, people like David McGoldrick and Gareth Bale. Both of them will probably get a run out which is good for them. David McGoldrick is 18 and Gareth is only 16 so we'll have to look at it - the game against Millwall may be better as a home crowd could help."

Young striker David McGoldrick has been on the bench in the last two games after a prolific season that has seen him score 39 goals and counting. With Saints struggling to find the net all season there have been increasing calls to give him a try out in the first team, particularly after nearly 10,000 saw him score a double in the semi-final of the youth cup.

Strangely enough, the making of his season looks to have been his unimpressive loan spell at former club Notts County earlier in the season where he failed to score or earn rave reviews from their supporters. This showed him what was required even at a lower level and he has knuckled down since his return and has easily made the step up into reserve team football.

That attitude will be of great help in his attempts to become a first team regular. As Dexter Blackstock and Leon Best have shown, form for the reserves does not necessarily translate into form in the first team, particularly in a very physical Championship.

Also set to play a part over the Easter period is academy left back Gareth Bale, who at just 16 is already a Welsh U21 international. Saints have been once bitten already this season in playing a certain 16 year old by the name of Walcott who has since faded into relative obscurity at Arsenal and must be regretting his big money move. Of course we would be happy to welcome him back and resurrect his career.

However, Bale does not have the profile that Walcott had to endure and Saints should be spared another tabloid feeding frenzy if Bale indeed does get his chance.

Left back has been a problem position for Saints all season and Burley wants to assess his options ahead of the summer to see if he may have a potential candidate within the club already.

Despite some all action performances at left back Danny Higginbotham is better as a central defender and Burley has preferred Brennan at left midfield in recent weeks, meaning Ostlund was played out of position at left back against Brighton to little effect.

Another option for next season is Kyle Critchell who made an unexpected return in today's suprise 5-1 defeat to MK Dons and will be working hard in pre-season to try and catch the manager's eye. Indeed given the previous unstoppable form of our U18s and the woeful form of the MK Dons first team they may well want to swap their sides around for next season. It was certainly suggested a few times by our own fans last season.
