Going for Goals

Last season, Southampton relied very heavily on James Beattie to get the points. Gordon Strachan has tried to ensure that this eggs in one basket approach doesn't continue. The biggest sign of that was the signing of Kevin Phillips, who looks very capable of matching Beattie goal for goal.

Neil McCann has been brought in to give the left hand side a more attacking look and to provide important cover for Chris Marsden FG.

However, in the centre more is expected from Svensson, Delap and Oakley. Delap insists he;s up for the challenge and his time as a striker at Derby should hold him in good stead.

"It is a long time since I scored in the league and it is a weakness in my game which I need to sort out,'' said Delap

"As a midfield unit we did not score enough goals between us last season and we cannot rely on James Beattie to keep getting them for us.''

Hopefully, Anders Svensson who is a prolific scorer for his country and Matt Oakley who finds himself on defensive duties too often will take note.
