Starting line-up

Davis - 7 Man of the match: Best of a bad bunch. It says it all that the keeper was the star man despite letting in three goals. Superb in the air, some sharp reaction saves and even managed a party piece with the penalty save, we'd be down already without his performances. Might have anticipated the second chip better, being caught off his line, but it's spliting hairs.

Thompson - 3: A near impossible task for an inexperienced youngster to play out of position, but he had a terrible time of it, bar a couple of decent crosses from his more natural wing position. Muscled off the ball too easily, caught out of position and unsure what to do in possession, he was ruthlessly targeted once Charlton identified him as the weak link. Can't think what this will do to his confidence. We may not have many options, but there have to be better ones than this.

Saeijs - 4: What a time to play possibly his worst game for Saints. Not helped by the lack of midfield in front of him or Thompson to the right of him, but was far from the assured presence he has been since joining the club. Made two good runs upfield, but his bread and butter is to defend. Davis saved his blushes after he conceded the penalty for blatant holding.

Perry - 5: Another left exposed by his teammates, he was not at his dominant best on the ground and in the air, as Charlton threatened to cut loose. Did make several trademark well-timed interceptions on a busy afternoon for him.

Skacel - 5: Showed some touches of real quality in attack, with accurate crossing and a powerful drive kept out ironically by Euell. Was caught upfield on occasion as Saints chased the game. Maybe it's time for him and Surman to swap to free him from his defensive duties.

Lallana - 3: Was anonymous for nearly the entire game offering nothing in attack until a mishit shot in the second half and little to no protection for Thompson in defence. Desperately short of confidence, he needs a spell on the bench.

Wotton - 4: Despite his undoubted effort levels, he looks slow, poor on the ball and uncertain in his passing. He was overrun in midfield with precious little support from his teammates, only serving to illustrate how badly we are missing Gillett. His yellow might well have been a red as he went studs up in a revenge tackle.

McGoldrick - 5: Another lovely goal as he jinked into the box and slotted neatly with his left foot, but there is more to central midfield than the odd eye-catching run. Without Gillett's speed to cover back for him he left Saints exposed by some poor positional play too far away from Wotton. Picked up noticeably with Saints chasing the game late on, but why couldn't he do this from the start? With his finishing improving, the potential is there, but probably as support striker rather than in central midfield.

Surman - 5: Still a way short of his best form, he was guilty of letting the game pass him by at times. Unfortunate not to score with a blocked free kick and saved header, when he does get his passing game going so do Saints, but the consistency is just not there over ninety minutes.

Euell - 5: Although he made his name as a striker for Wimbledon, he is not a natural in front of the goal missing a series of excellent chances that Saganowski would have expected to gobble up. Did a massive amount of work in the air as Saints went direct, but a solitary scoring game all season says it all. Even managed to steer Skacel's drive away from goal despite being two yards out, although to be fair he was offside.

Saganowski - 6: After being on international duty, he can be forgiven for being tired, but did his usual legwork up front chasing lost causes and holding up the ball. Not quite at his peak in front of goal, with a neat turn and shot struck too close to the keeper and a lovely run ending in a sliced shot when the crowd was just waiting for the net to bulge. If only Euell's chances had fallen to Saganowski we might have scraped a draw or even an undeserved win.

Substitutes

Wright-Phillips - 7: A lively presence when he came on, he injected energy and directness into our attacking play. Even showed great persistence to make space and score a beauty into the top right corner, albeit with a slight deflection.

Smith - 6: Gradually showing more confidence on the ball, he has good pace, a trick or two and a willingness to beat his man. Didn't always work for him, as bizarrely he was played on the right and had to keep cutting back on his left foot. This was compounded by playing the right-footed Wright-Phillips on the left, although Wotte will point to Wright-Phillip's goal as to the method behind the madness.

Liptak - 5: Put on to add his considerable height to the Saints attack late on, despite winning the odd header, he is simply no striker. With defence the weakness, might have been a better option for Thompson at right back at half-time.
