Euell do nicely!

Burley had announced that a deal had been agreed with a Premiership midfielder yesterday and sure enough he was delighted to be able to unveil the versatile and talented Jason Euell.

So much of the past three years has been the steady dilution of Premier League quality from our squad, thanks to inevitable lure of Premier League riches. Although Euell hasn't had the best of years at Boro, he does bring genuine quality and is an impressive signing for the Championship.

It is up to Burley now to get the best out of a player, who was a regular goalscorer, first as a versatile striker cum midfielder at Wimbledon, then as a converted midfielder at Charlton. At Charlton he particularly caught the eye scoring 37 goals in 111 starts from central midfield.

At 30, he still has several good years left in him and we have to hope he is hungry to re-establish a reputation that saw him tipped for England honours while at Charlton.

Despite the prolific scoring of our front men, we lacked goals from midfield with Skacel taking time to settle and Belmadi all too often on the injury bench. Euell brings the potential for goals, but also a lesser known passing ability that should be a perfect complement to Safri's playmaking talents.

As a former striker Euell can also cover up front, with Saints down to four strikers with McGoldrick's loan to Port Vale. He will also give Burley options to play 4-5-1 when defending a lead or at difficult away venues.

The question is where this will leave Viafara, but there is plenty of room for him in the squad. He will play while Euell is settling in and is a more than viable alternative at defensive and right midfield. It doesn't have to be an either or decision.

The club also has a bid in for a defender, but Burley is less optimistic that he can pull off the move in time, vowing to turn to the loan market if the move fails.

Welcome to the club, Jason, and make sure you justify my big build up!
