End of season awards

Player of the season
Let's just get this one out of the way. I know who it is, you know who it is and he knows who he is. Captain 'Super' Kelvin Davis has shaken off the inconsistent form of his first two years with Saints to become the stand-out player and a rock at the back showing the form that made him the Championship's keeper of the season when at Ipswich. Without his gravity-defying saves we would have been relegated a long time ago. Let's just hope he can agree a contract with the new owners, as there will certainly be other suitors for his signature.

Honourable mention
Given the string of frankly shocking loan signings that have graced our line-ups this season, Jan-Paul Saeijs was the exception showing real quality, bravery and a fantastic will to win. His long range strike to earn a last minute draw against Watford will live long in the memory. Another player who has indicated his willingness to stay but it may all depend on whether his club Roda get relegated and if Saints new owners can find the money for a transfer fee.

Game of the season
Slim pickings you may think, but who can forget Saints' magnificent comeback away to win 3-2 against Preston after being 2-0 down at half-time, with a sensational debut by Oscar Gobern and a wonderful run and finish by David McGoldrick to spark wild celebrations.

Honourable mention
For the shere shock value, it's Preston again as Saints did the double over the play-off chasers in some style, shocking St Mary's by being 3-0 up at half-time, going on to win 3-1. Not only that, but it setup a run of three successive victories that unfortunately proved another false dawn. If only we could have played them every week...

Goal of the season
We may have scored with better strikes, but we didn't score a better quality goal all season. Saints broke at speed from a QPR corner with Adam Lallana motoring down the pitch, exchanging a perfect one-two with Simon Gillett and then sliding an accurate finish past the keeper for a goal full of youthful promise that hinted at great things to come. We then went on to lose 4-1. They didn't come.

Honourable mention
The shock value alone would earn a mention, but when coupled to the quality of the 30 yard strike, it's that man again Jan-Paul Saeijs against Watford that is a very close runner up.

Flop of the season
It was a truly baffling decision to sign Anthony Pulis from Stoke giving his long injury record and very infrequent, and by all reports underwhelming, appearances for a succession of clubs up and down the leagues. He arrived injured and then even when briefly fit failed to make an appearance all season. He finished the season injured.

Honourable mention
For a player once dubbed the 'new Zidane' to be quite so unsuited to the Championship was quite a feat, but Romain Gasmi managed it. Brushed off the ball with such embarrassing ease in his brief appearances from the bench, he arrived injured and then played like he wanted to avoid injury at all costs.

Young player of the season
It looked like this award would be in the bag for Adam Lallana after some dynamic early season performances, but he failed to maintain his early sparkle as the pressure of a long first season took its toll. However, one youngster did improve game-on-game not only learning a new position, but becoming competent at it. Step forward the initially maligned Lloyd James who went from potential liability to one of the most solid defenders and accurate crossers in the team.

Honourable mention
Such a shame he ruptured his Achillles after breaking into the first team with such an impact or Kyle McLaggon would have been challenging for the main award. Quick, surprisingly tenacious for his size and with an eye for goal, he will be one to watch next season.
