The 34-year-old joined the Saints from Benfica for £350,000 in March 2000 and became a firm favourite at the club.

Tahar told the club’s official website: “I don't know what I am going to do now. Maybe I will go home to Morocco.

“It is very sad to be going because I love the club, the city and the fans.

“I have had a very good time here. There have been some good results and some bad results, but I have enjoyed it all.

“Southampton will always have a place in my heart. I thank them for everything and wish them good luck for the future. I really hope to see them playing in the UEFA Cup next season.”

El-Khalej follows Ecuador skipper Kleber Chala and Latvian international Imants Bleidelis out of St Mary's.
