Dyer not going Viafara way

While Dyer's decision may have been spun by the club website as being a vote of confidence for the 'revolutionary' new coaching regime, a lack of suitors due to his off the field problems may well be a big factor.

Sources close to this site remain convinced that the real tipping point was his removal from the site header after 84% of you voted to remove him to be replaced with Le Tissier and Surman. A good season and continued development may well be a route back to that most coveted of positions...

Dyer was said to be keen on a move to the Premiership with the riches and profile that comes with it, but with barely a half season's regular football behind him, it represented a gamble for his career, as Mills, Cranie and Baird have shown.

He signs a three year contract and provides welcome pace to the right wing slot providing competition for Wright-Phillips and Saganowski if he stays.

Viafara looks set to head home to Columbia to be reunited with his young family after admitting his homesickness. His lack of focus has led to him being excluded from training after a poor performance against Weymouth which saw him substituted barely half way through the first half.

While Saints would have been hoping to get a million pound fee from another English club, he is said to be on the verge of a move to old club Once (Twice?) Caldas telling Planet Futbol "I'm hoping to reach an agreement. They already know and believe that it will not be complicated."

With two players, Schneiderlin and Wotton, signed in central midfield, the relatively high earner's future at the club was always in doubt. Always committed on the field until this pre-season, it's a shame to see his Saints' career ending this way, but a move suits both parties with Saints' financial problems brought into sharp focus by today's trading statements revealing a whopping £5m loss.
