Dyer heads to Burnley on loan

Dyer's initial month long loan comes the day after striker Dexter Blackstock's loan move to Derby. While there has been considerable debate about whether Blackstock should have been allowed to go on loan, the Burnley move is much clearer cut.

With only two appearances in the league cup and a very brief appearance as substitute in the league game against Crewe, he needs first team experience to push on with his development. At 17 and with some filling out to do physically, he is unlikely to gain many first team appearances at Saints at the moment.

A spell at Burnley could do him the world of good. Harry is a big believer in young players proving themselves on loan and a spell at another Championship club will show how ready he is for first team football. It is all very well running rings around all-comers in the dominant U18 team, but the extra pressure and hard knocks of first team football will give him a taste of what is required at this level.

It will be fascinating to see how he gets on up at Burnley. He's a player that excites fans with his electric pace, good close control and an eye for goal. Theo Walcott and Martin Cranie have showed that Harry will play the youngsters if he feels they are ready, so it is now up to Nathan to prove that he has what it takes to join them in the future.
