Delgado in Demand

Real Sociadad and Milan have both been linked with the Ecuadorian. His brother Marcos, first to leak details of Delgado's decision to leave added: ''I know there has been some interest in Agustin from Spain," he said. "That is where he would like to go.''

While it seems likely that Saints will cash in on a good World Cup from Delgado, the whole thing seems to have been poor fir the club. I would have much rather have seen the club forge some strong links to South America and have a couple of Ecuadorian stars in the side for next season, rather than simply use them to cash in on the tournament.

The Ecuadorian website typically fanned the flames higher saying: "Delgado is hoping to perform well with Ecuador in the World Cup in Japan and Korea and, with this, have the opportunity to be transferred to another club with a better level and tradition.

"The striker did not give any names yet, nor from which countries they are from. But he stated that his agent was negotiating in various European countries to try to settle an agreement with a big club.

"Before signing for Southampton, Italian club Milan asked for his transfer price, and although their interest in him was merely informal, further relations with the player cannot be disregarded."
