Damiano named new assistant manager

Damiano's appointment was confirmed at a press conference earlier today, and his experience will no doubt be a considerable asset to Steve Wigley and the Southampton squad.

The Frenchman has previously been assistant manager at a number of clubs, including working alongside Jean Tigana at Fulham, before moving on to join the coaching staff at Gerrard Houllier's Liverpool.

His arrival signals the end of Saint's search for an experienced coach to help Wigley's transition into management, but speculation regarding the position of the manager himself remains as strong as ever.

Speaking of Damiano, Wigley told the club's official website: "I thought long and hard about what I wanted, I did not just want to bring in a friend or someone similar to myself or Dennis Rofe."

"I wanted someone on the same wavelength but who would offer something different."

"The chairman was very impressed by him and I am delighted he has backed my judgement. I am looking forward to working with Christian and Dennis and the rest of the staff to move us up the table."
