Crouch pushed towards exit

"10 players have gone out and they were good players, they were 10 of our top 20," said Redknapp. I'm not quite sure if this is another attempt at motivation, Redknapp style, or if he's actually trying to put the mockers on Saints chances of promotion before the pre season friendlies.

I note that Harry's "ten of our top twenty" weren't quite good enough to keep us in the top flight.

One ready source of pennies is in selling off our better players, assuming Redknapp hasn't branded them all as "useless". Phillips has already gone, with very little remorse. His striking partner, Peter Crouch may well be next.

Southampton have already turned down a £6 million bid from West Ham and a similar amount from Liverpool. However, with a number of clubs interested, it seems as though Saints are just creating a bidding war rather than desperately trying to hold on to the player.

Redknapp stated that "Peter wants to go and play for Liverpool where he can play in the Champions League and get eight times the pay," shows exactly where this one is going to end. An offer of around £8 million is believed to be the magic number Saints are looking for.

"I was told I could bring in two frees on small wages and that's what I have done," said Harry stating the club's transfer ambitions for the coming season quite clearly.

"That's the limit so I've not tracked anyone else. If Peter Crouch goes that might change but I want him to stay."

I don't believe for a moment that Redknapp can keep his hands away from football's equivalent of Exchange and Mart for five minutes. So, I'm quite sure that he'd not be starting from scratch in tracking players should Crouch depart. I just think that any money spent will have to go to other areas of the team than up front.

With Harry saying that we'll only go back up if we keep our best players, just how will Saints cope with an Ormerod/ Blackstock partnership in the Championship?
