Chaplow joins Saints on loan

Chaplow, 21, is an England U21 international who joined West Brom from Burley for £1.5m. This season he has been restricted to 7 appearances in the Premiership and 4 in the cups, scoring a memorable double against Saints' next opponents Reading.

He scored 7 league goals in the Championship for Burley in 55 starts and 21 substitute appearances and so is not the answer to our goal-scoring problems in midfield, although he should add much needed quality with Belmadi and Prutton out injured.

With Saints having five sizable bids rejected in the transfer window, George Burley is having to resort to loan moves to bolster our depleted squad shorn of its best players after the departures of Quashie, Walcott and Niemi.

While loan signings are not ideal for the long term, they do give Saints the possibility of signing players from the Premiership keen to impress, who might otherwise be reluctant to drop down a league permanently. This week should see the announcement of a further two loan signings, with a striker top of the wish list.
