Burley looking for defensive cover on loan

With three experienced centre halves out of action and a 17 year old as the club's only recognised left back, George Burley is looking to bring in a couple of players on loan.

With so much team rebuilding over the last few months, Burley has finally got the squad he wants, bar sufficient cover in defence. With Svensson, Lundekvam and Powell out injured, the departure of the versatile Danny Higginbotham to Stoke has left Saints short at the back.

Burley was relieved that Bale and 'not that' Pele came through late fitness tests to play against West Brom, as, after Martin Cranie, Saints have no more viable options at the back. It may have meant a debut for Kyle Critchell at left back, but the youngster has not played a single minute for Saints in the league and Burley has admitted that he is not quite ready for the first team.

It was unfortunate that Saints released the left-sided Jim Brennan who would be ideal back-up for Bale, as the 17 year old cannot be expected to play every game despite his outstanding form so far this season, indeed he has pulled out of the Wales U21 squad due to his thigh injury.

Burley will be keeping a keen eye on who is surplus to requirements in the Premiership with an experienced centre half top of the wish list. Saints had hoped to have Michael Svensson back after he went on the pre-season tour to Sweden, but his knee is still troubling him and both club and player are understandably cautious.

One final rumour is that Theo Walcott will return on loan to gain more first team experience after developing some nasty splinters sitting on the Arsenal and England bench since his £12m move.

Although Burley joked that he wouldn't get in Saints' team, there will always be a place for someone with his talent and electric pace, either on the right of midfield or as an impact striker.

It would certainly be strange to see him back in a Saints' shirt after such an emotional departure, but he still retains a love for the club and has been spotted at both youth and senior team games catching up with his friends and family. Let's face it, he could do with the exercise.
