Burley is reunited with duo

Since the departure of Peter Crouch, Saints have been crying out for a target man to hold the ball up and bring others into play, as well as fill the goals void the man with the 'good touch for a big man' left behind.

It has been as if Saints have been pining for the big man and insisting on punting balls out of defence in the general direction of the front two. With a succession of strikers both failing to find the net and to hold the ball up, the signing of Rasiak is long overdue and should also help create chances for the likes of Masden, Pahars and Blackstock.

Rasiak is a Polish international hungry to retain his place up front and add to his 21 caps and 6 goals. He moved very late in the summer transfer window from Derby to Spurs, but with Mido in good form has failed to make the breakthrough in the Premiership just yet, starting 4 games and coming on as sub for 4 more.

He is the proven article in this league having starred for Derby under George Burley with an impressive 18 goals in 41 appearances. It may take him a little while to regain his confidence and to get to know his teammates, but he is a very welcome addition to the squad.

For all of the accusations of the Saints board not investing in the team, he signs on loan initially with a £2m permanent deal already agreed in the summer. While a welcome change after spending only a meagre £90k on Ricardo Fuller, the proof of the pudding will be in the summer when the board simply have to back the manager and allow him to build a promotion winning team.

Also joining today is midfielder Jermaine Wright who signs on an initial month's loan from Leeds. He was part of George Burley's promotion winning side at Ipswich, but has been out of the picture at Leeds, having already been on loan at Millwall earlier in the season, and is looking for a permanent move.

Clearly a player Burley knows well, he can play across the midfield, but is better known as a Matty Oakley holding player in front of the back four. He does chip in with the odd goal, scoring 2 during his 15 appearances for Millwall.

Indeed after Oakley's ineffective performance against Derby, Burley will be hoping that the competition brings the best out of both of them, with Wright looking likely to start in his place at Reading.
