Burley finally gets his man

Idiakez has long been a target of Burley with the Saints manager expressing his admiration for the player back in January. Idiakez put in arguably the best performance by a visiting player at St Mary's last season. He was practically untouchable on the ball and put in a series of dangerous set pieces.

Yes, he may be getting on at 32, but he ran the game against us at walking pace and will be good for at least the two years of his contract. He is also a regular goalscorer, netting an impressive 21 times in 93 starts, plus 3 as sub. There is likely to be a real scrap for the ball on set pieces in range, with Bale and Skacel existing specialists at the club.

The disjointed display against Preston showed just why Burley wants him at the club so badly. Saints were simply unable to retain possession in midfield and lacked creativity and incisiveness failing to creat enough chances or get Rudi Skacel on the ball enough.

Idiakez didn't have a great game against Saints in the 2-2 draw, but he was aware that a move was on the cards and failed to find favour with new manager Billy Davies. Idiakez represents yet another former Burley signing after the arrivals of Makin, Wright, Rasiak and Davis.

The move gives Saints fans a lift after the disappointment of seeing top scorer Ricardo Fuller leave the club unexpectedly. It is a shame that the two players cannot link up, but the Spaniard should at least provide more chances for the remaining front men.

Welcome to the club, Inigo.
