Bridge to Japan says Strachan

Gordon Strachan is adamant that Wayne Bridge should be selected for the England World Cup squad. Despite Saturday's game being poor, Wayne still excelled and every week he seems to be improving further. Gordon said: "I would say on Saturday's performance that if keeps that standard up then I just don't think you can leave him out - irrespective of what anybody else is doing.

"To return from international duty with a knock and come back like that says a lot for him, but it's well documented what I think about him as a person and it doesn't surprise me.

"He's not going to have a problem mentally about the fact he's just played for England because of the way he's been brought up.

"He's been brought up to respect people, to understand what you do, to respect his teammates, to respect the people he's playing against.

"It's just in his make-up and you can sniff it but I've been about long enough where you can also sniff people who, when they get a wee bit of success, can be a problem to themselves and people round about them.

"Good players don't do that and he's a good player. Good players think of their team-mates more than themselves."

"I think to go on a level he needs to be more of an influence on the pitch and he did that on Saturday and became a huge influence on the pitch," he said.

"He won't play like that every week because you can't play like that every week, but he has to make sure if he doesn't play like that, that he is a big influence on the game."
