Blackburn accept Southampton's £15m bid for Adam Armstrong

Southampton have agreed a £15m fee with Blackburn Rovers to sign striker Adam Armstrong as their replacement for Danny Ings.

Last season's top scorer, Ings sealed a £30m move to Aston Villa after making it clear that he was prepared to let his contract at St Mary's expire, and the Saints have been looking at a handful of names to replace him.

Chelsea youngster Armando Broja is expected to join on loan, but the biggest acquisition could be Armstrong as 90min has confirmed that a £15m fee has been agreed with Blackburn.

The 24-year-old was outstanding in the Championship last season, racking up 28 goals in 40 appearances, and Blackburn are willing to cash in now as Armstrong has entered the final 12 months of his contract.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed with the striker, with a possible relegation wage cut one of a handful of issues which still need ironing out.

Despite that, Armstrong has already been scheduled for a medical on Tuesday, with Southampton keen to get a deal over the line as soon as possible to give the Englishman maximum time to prepare for the new season.

Both Norwich and Crystal Palace had been chasing Armstrong's signature, but it's Southampton who have moved to the front of the queue after expressing a willingness to meet Blackburn's asking price. The Championship side have rejected several bids already this window and were holding out for a hefty sum because Armstrong's former side, Newcastle, are entitled to a sizeable amount of any fee.

It is understood that Newcastle negotiated themselves close to 40% of any future sale when they sold Armstrong to Blackburn for less than £2m back in 2018.

While there is still work to do in their pursuit of Armstrong, Southampton are close to striking a loan deal for 19-year-old Broja, who bagged ten goals in the Eredivisie with Vitesse last season.
