Bialkowski signs on

A popular figure among players and fans alike, Bart 'Polish boy mountain' Bialkowski, shot to prominence last season when he earned himself a run in the first team, after the indifferent form of Paul Smith, at the tender age of just 18.

He looked set for an extended run between the posts for Saints until cruel luck in the cup against Newcastle saw him damage cruciate ligaments, with Dexter 'Dextrous Backstop' Blackstock memorably called into goalkeeping action with all subs used.

Bart has slowly made his way back to fitness and has now successfully come through several reserve team outings, with it surely just a matter of time before he makes the bench and then starts challenging Kelvin Davis for a place in the starting eleven.

Expectations have been raised after he was signed from obscurity by George Burley who was impressed with him during a trial at former club Hearts. With Davis making some high profile blunders earlier in the season, Bart must be sensing his chances of another run in the first team.

However, Davis has to some extent redeemed himself of late with some good performances despite several nervous moments and it will be interesting to see how he copes on his return to Sunderland where he had a record breaking season for all the wrong reasons in the Black Cats terrible run.

It can only be good for Saints to have Bart putting pressure on him to be at his best to keep his place.
