Benali resigned to squad status

Saints veteran Francis Benali seems resigned to his role as squad member of the Saints instead of first team regular. Franny has been unable to get ahead of Wayne Bridge for the last couple of seasons. Bridge's form has been exceptional and Benali will probably see out his playing career in the reserves and on the bench. He's still a very important part of the club however and in addition to providing excellent cover at left back and in the centre of defence, it is hoped that he will find a coaching role within the club.
Francis said: "It has been nice to be involved with the lads and travelling to games but I have just missed out on the bench. To be fair Wayne Bridge is in superb form and if he gets his England call-up this week-end he will thoroughly deserve it. As for me, I am just keeping as fit as I can so that when the opportunity comes I will be ready to take it."
