Benali battling to be fit for Blackburn

Francis Benali picked up a knock in the cup game against Millwall. True to his reputation, Franny played on to the end, but it was clear that it was getting worse. Now he could miss out on the game against Blackburn, allowing Danny Higginbotham to make his debut.

"I can't believe it!", said Franny. "I have waited so long for this chance and now this has happened. To say I am disappointed would be an under-statement - it is sickening!

"I took a bang just before half-time. One of their centre-backs leaned into me with a fair bit of weight on it. I took a couple of steps and felt a twinge and it just got worse.
"I managed to get through the game but today it is very tight and sore. I have not written off Saturday yet but there must be a doubt.

"I have enjoyed the run of games and we have had some decent results and I wanted the chance to keep that going and to show what I can do, especially with Wayne Bridge being injured and Danny Higginbotham coming in."

While I was surprised that Saints brought in Marcus Hall considering Franny's experience, losing out to Higginbotham this Saturday could be the end for Benali as a Saint.

Seeing him back at the side reminds us of the old days, especially seeing him clear it off the line. But despite Franny's ability, it's clear just how much we miss Wayne Bridge. It has to be said, that if we want to progress into fighting for a place in Europe, then Benali's time as a player has come to an end.

He's been a fantastic servant to the club and hopefully will stay on in a coaching capacity. However, once Higginbotham has settled into the squad and especially the training regime demanded by Strachan he will get a game.
