Bart injury leaves Smith playing for keeps

The knee injury is eerily familiar for Saints fans who have seen the likes of Michael Svensson, Marian Pahars and Matthew Oakley out with injuries that drag on and on. We can only hope that Bart will make a speedy recovery and continue the rapid progress that saw him displace Smith as Saints no.1 after only a handful of outings for the reserves.

It is rare for a keeper to secure the no.1 shirt even in his early twenties let alone his teens and it is a sign of how highly George Burley rates the young Pole having previously had him on trial at Hearts.

His injury means another extended opportunity for Paul Smith who has spent the majority of his Saints career on the bench, giving Saints fans limited glimpes of his undoubted ability. Since joining in January 2004, he has only made 11 league starts and 6 in the cup.

He must have been relieved to see the Finnish genius Antti Niemi heading to Fulham and an 18 year old signed in his wake, only to see that relief turn to frustration as the youngster took over his place in the first team.

The stop-gap signing of Miller as cover bodes well for Smith's long term future under Burley. If Saints had signed a Premiership keeper who went straight into the first team, then he would rightly have been considering a move come the summer.

As it is, he is the undisputed no.1 until the end of the season and will hope to put nervous moments in the last few games behind him and build his confidence and show the kind of form from the Premiership that had some tipping him for an England call up.
