Are you watching Bournemouth?

It was not so such much the away loss to the second placed team in the league, more the manner of it and the fight shown by those teams below us as the nightmare scenario rears its ugly head - relegation.

Of the sides below us, Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall, Crewe and Derby all fought out valuable wins, with only Brighton getting a solitary point, and Saints second consecutive meek surrender has served to emphasise the danger facing a Saints team in freefall.

I can remember during pre-season interviewing several fellow editors, as part of the 'Meet the Opposition' features and confidently predicting a top six finish for Saints. They warned me that it takes a long time to adjust to this league for a side from the Premiership, but even they didn't predict the current slump.

The fight seems to have gone out of our collection of loans, frees and old timers who seem incapable of responding to George Burley as we try to play tippy-tappy football in a very physical league.

Our injury list is now building up to Premiership proportions with the heart of our misfiring midfield ripped out and even fresh hope Rasiak picking up of all things, a buttock strain. I'll leave the puns to you on that one.

As ever we continue to do favours for those sides around us. First, we help propel Burnley up the league, thanks to a series of cameos from Nathan Dyer. Now we are providing the heart of the Sheffield Wednesday midfield in Yoann Folly when we lack a holding midfielder. Stupid, plain stupid.

Watching the first team at the moment seems like another club entirely to the youth team who play with desire, pace and confidence. It is difficult to see where the next point is coming from and we have still to play Brighton and Millwall who will be fancying their chances on present form.

In any other season, we have an easy looking run in, bar Palace away, with Burnley, Cardiff, Brighton, Stoke, Millwall and Leicester to play, plus 6 points and a game in hand over the relegation positions. Even on Tuesday night we are facing the side bottom of both the home and away form tables, Burnley.

If we do indeed stay up, we may face the ultimate irony that Redknapp kept us up and may even yet keep Pompey up. What a perfect twist to a miserable season.
