Another England blinder from Bridge. - Saints Mad

Another England blinder from Bridge.

Last updated : 29 March 2002 By Christian Kelly
Saints left back put in another excellent performance for England against Italy. Wayne was composed and executed his defensive duties admirably. While other debutants and players with few caps tried too hard and made mistakes, Joe Cole in particular, Wayne looked as though he had been in the England shirt for years.

Italy had a few early attacks down the left, but quickly switched when faced with Bridge's resolute defending. England's other full back, Danny Mills, also impressed.

On the attacking front, Bridge got forward fairly rarely, although his passing was excellent and one telling cross could easily have led to a goal.

Against such a talented side such as Italy, this attitude was entirely correct. Bridge had to ensure he was properly positioned to prevent Italy utilising their obvious attacking strengths.

At half time Bridge was one of only two players to stay on the park for England. Bridge finally went off to a great crowd response after 87 minutes having surely done enough to earn a place in the final squad. Italy immediately went on to grab a winner after Bridge's departure which was perhaps telling.

On Bridge's performance England manager Svenn Goran Eriksson said: "I was impressed and I think Bridge did well. He is a modern left-back. He knows how to defend and when he attacks he is not afraid to show his abilities. He is quick and has a good left foot."

Italian manager Giovanni Trapattoni said: "I knew all about Heskey but Bridge was impressive."
