All aboard the Bridge Bandwagon

With the England squad to be announced this Saturday it looks increasingly likely that Southampton's left back, Wayne Bridge will feature. England are certainly struggling for talent down the left, so it's little wonder that Wayne, who has been ever present in the side for the past two seasons should receive a call up. Talented going forward down the left flank having become an accomplished left back should surely result in Wayne receiving his first full cap soon. As reported a couple of days ago, Gordon Strachan certainly thinks Wayne is talented enough ( Click here if you missed it)

Wayne himself is quietly optimistic of a call up too saying: "With Ashley Cole injured, there is an opening in the England squad - and it would be wonderful if I did get a call-up," he said.

"I would not feel overawed or out of place, and if I am going to get a chance before the World Cup finals then now is probably the time.

"Sven-Goran Eriksson is likely to do any experimenting sooner rather than later so this might be my chance. It would be a hell of a game to make my debut.

"It would be a great experience and a dream come to true to play for England against the Dutch in Amsterdam, but I'm not taking anything for granted.

"I've seen all the speculation I might be in the squad. It's a very exciting prospect, but I'm not counting any chickens until and unless it happens.

"I've made very rapid progress and I'm already well ahead of what I ever dreamed might happen.

"A full England cap would be amazing. If it comes, I will do my utmost to take it - and I would love to go to the World Cup."

"I still feel I'm establishing myself in the Southampton side and learning my trade."

"I've only recently got into the under-21 side regularly, so I have a long way to go.

"If the England call-up does not happen this time, I won't get down about it because I have plenty of time ahead of me.

"I'm still young and learning the game so hopefully there would be other chances."

Echoing the sentiments of Manager and fans alike is Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe. Rupert said: "Wayne has been in brilliant form this season and it is hard to think of a better player in his position.

"It would be good for the club if Wayne was selected by England. It would raise the profile of the club in many respects and show people that you don't have to play for the major clubs in order to fulfill international ambitions.

"I understand that in the past many Saints players appeared for England and it was not uncommon but this has not been the case recently."
