The Ginger Reaction: Everton

Gordon Strachan was clearly annoyed with his players against Everton, to the extent of keeping them behind after the match for a dressing down and getting them to come in for Sunday training. We all know how Saints perform when there isn't impending relegation, but how is the new boss to turn things around. On the team's performance against Everton Gordon said: "That was the most disappointing performance since I have been Southampton's manager by a million miles. And I hope never to see a performance like that so long as I am here."

"If people paid £8 to watch that on the telly, they would be quite right to get on the phone to Sky and complain - I would have," said Strachan.

"The only thing I'm positive about it that I didn't have to pay. But I am paid mentally, and it is a lot more than £8."

"I'm shocked. I'm past the disappointed and angry stage - and now I have to look at how on earth I, as a manager, can be responsible for that performance.

"I've not got an answer yet - but I will to analyse myself. There were too many things that disappointed me, so I've literally said nothing to the players. When I can compose myself, I'll talk to them.

"Nobody at the club can absolve themselves of responsibility for that game. We've all got to look at ourselves, because if you'd paid your £8 to watch that on pay-per-view, you'd want your money back.

"I'm not accepting the excuse that it was an end-of-season match. Players face questions on the pitch, and the answers for them were self-explanatory."

Strachan went on to tell the official site: "It would be easy for me to rant and rave but I am not going to slam and blast the players. Over the time I have been here I should thank them.

"But I am disappointed and angry about this and we have to ask how on earth it could happen. I will take my share of responsibility and I hope the players will look at themselves.

"No-one at this club did their jobs today. It was a bad, bad day and we cannot just take it - we have to analyse it and look at what we could have done differently."

Perhaps instead of appearance money, their contracts should be rewritten to have win bonuses instead. Annoyingly, they probably get both already. Removing this comfort zone would be a step in the right direction and getting them to do Sunday training is a start.

David Moyes, must be very happy with how things are turning out for him at Everton. They have reached safety and look a lot better than they did under Smith. Moyes said of the Saints game:  "Victories away from home have been difficult to come by us this season, so to come here and win is very pleasing."

"The match was not the most exciting but everyone worked hard and it was a good team performance.

"We've now got 43 points and with the fixtures Ipswich have got left, that should be enough. I hope that's enough because if you don't stay up with that total, something is wrong."
