Ginger Reaction - Chelsea

Claudio Ranieri tried to put his sides performance down to the supposed long ball style of Saints . While failing to say anything about his sides lack of ability to cope with whatever tactics the opposition play he said: "It was a different game to the one the other night with Manchester United. Southampton have another way of playing.

"They try to put a long ball to Beattie and then play off the second ball. It is difficult for us - we try to play football and keep possession.

"Fabrice Fernandes scored a good goal but we gave them a big present in the second half."

"We made too many mistakes, missed too many chances. It is okay to draw in a match like this but normally we want to win.

"We played well against Man United last Friday but that's a different game, a different style. Southampton always try to play the long ball and win the second ball. It is not our way and it is difficult for us. Like Man Utd we always want to play good football.

"But Charlton are like Southampton and we managed to beat them. So it is disappointing to only draw."

"Fernandes scored a good goal for Southampton but we gave them a big present."

Unsurprisingly Godon Strachan saw things a little differently. "No it's not fair," he said. "I'm not going to play the way they play because he's fortunate to buy players that are £15m.

"Once I am as lucky as that I can comment on how teams can play.

"It's amazing how good a coach you can be when you've got £30m or £40m.

"Try working with a million and see how good a coach you can be."

"We gave it a go. We got hold of the game and I thought we did very well.

"If the players keep performing like that I've not got a problem and we can have a very good season.

"Ability got a goal for Chelsea and ability got a goal for us - it was a good game."

"We are a wee bit lacking in the final 20 yards."

"It was ability which got each side a point and that is what counts."

"We gave it a go and did very well. The boys gave me a performance and if we keep playing like that we'll have very good season."
