Ginger Reaction - Blackburn

"I'm lost for words," said Strachan. "That shouldn't happen. I doubt very much if we'll have as many chances again this year, or if Blackburn will against them.

"Graeme Souness came to apologise to me afterwards. He didn't know where to look.

"The fans were confused - they didn't know whether to boo or cry! However hard our fans think we've been done by it must be horrific for the players to lose like that."

Blackburn, and ex-Saints boss, Graeme Souness said: "St Mary's has been a lucky ground for us. We didn't deserve to win here last year and we didn't deserve a draw today. I'm going to do the lottery when I get in.

"Everything went wrong in the first 15 minutes and they should have been so far in front in the first half it should have been a formality.

"I couldn't repeat what I said at half-time because that was easily our worst performance of the season. That's as bad as we've been in my time at the club, but we've got out of jail."

While I thought that far too many of Saints chances went comfortably close to Friedel, there's no doubt that he put in yet another impressive performance. Strachan said:"Friedel must have got changed in a telephone box today. I wouldn't be surprised if when he takes his shirt off there's a blue jersey with an "s" on underneath it."

With a tiring Saints caught once again, in two minds on how to best hold on to a lead, Strachan said that this is critical if the club are going to push their way back up the table.

"Bolton scored in injury-time and United had to wait until five minutes from the end," said Gordon. "It's just getting over that winning line. We can't get over it.

"You have to find an answer because it's a crying shame not to win. If we'd let no late goals in this season we would be level with Manchester United.

"We've got good players here, a decent squad. They've just got to look around and their confidence should be good. I don't think we're soft touches any more.

"The main reason is our final cross or shot. Injury-time goals wouldn't be a problem if we took the chances we create.

"If you score five, six or seven then letting one in at the end of the match doesn't matter.

"It can become a phobia. We'll hang around the middle of the table if we keep missing chances but if we start putting them in we will be a very good side.

"We will never really get into the top six. If you look at them it's the six richest clubs. But let's try and get the seventh position."

Still, it's not all bad news. Although Blackburn were fortunate to come away with a victory last season at St. Mary's, there was a world of difference between the two Saints sides in those games.

Saints are no pushovers anymore, and Strachan is steadily steering the club in right direction. In addition we have the best squad at our disposal in over a decade. That includes plenty of options up front.

"The difference between a good team and a very good team is goals," said Strachan. "We created chances at Old Trafford and Liverpool and again here but strikers are judged on results.

"I have four now and there is pressure for places. The onus is on them to start scoring goals. They are the final touches to this team and they have to do something about it.

"James Beattie and Brett Ormerod worked hard but I still think there is more to come from them. We had so many chances but did not take them and that is their pressure.

"We have the ability to go through teams but not to finish them off. We have to keep playing our football but find a way to get the final pass and score the goals."
