Oliver on his way ?

As Saints wait for Oliver Bierhoff to make up his mind over which club he wants to join, the media are having fun linking him with several. Bolton are new contenders for his signature after Real Betis and Fulham have seemingly dropped out.

Bierhoff said: "Rudi Voller has advised me to find a new club. It is true that Betis have dropped their interest but Southampton are still in the running."

If Bierhoff wants to stake a claim for the national side I would be very disappointed if he selected Bolton over us. Naturally Bolton fans probably feel exactly the same way. Hopefully Saints long tenure in the division coupled with our ambitions and ne ground will sway things in our favour.

Southampton, like the other clubs, are a little unerved by the 25-30 thousand a week wage Bierhoff is looking for. Chairman Rupert Lowe told the official site: "Oliver Bierhoff's wage demands are extremely high and I am not prepared to disrupt team harmony to that extent."

"His career would be very well served with us at Southampton and of course he is an outstanding player who would be a major asset to the side."

"His experience and success in European and international football is of the highest order and he is an exemplary ambassador for both football and his country."

"But we need some reality in negotiations. We are not Manchester United and he is not 25 anymore."

This could go on for quite some time...
