Beattie battles for his place

James Beattie reiterated his desire to fight for his place regardless of who was in the squad. Saints have been on the lookout for a striker with Bierhoff and Ikpeba being the most notable two.

In a situation resembling the arrival of Uwe Rosler, who has had an excellent pre season, Beattie recognises this as a spur to give his best. James told the official website: "I think it is healthy for the club and creates competition for places which is always good."

"It makes people want to be in the team and if good players are competing for that spot, then they will perform better."

Beattie had a memorable purple patch of goals last season but will need to improve his finishing to hold his place as the side's centre forward.
